How Retractor Maker Started

Retractor Maker started in 2023, but our experience with surgical instruments goes back much further.

I'm Saad Shahid, and I still work with my father at Hospitech Traders, our family's surgical instrument business. My father started Hospitech Traders in 1989, and we have been manufacturing and supplying surgical instruments for many years.

The idea for Retractor Maker came from one of our customers.

One day, a customer asked us for an abdominal surgery retractor. At that time, we were not manufacturing retractors, so I started looking at the products available from other companies.

What I found surprised me. Some complete retractor systems were being sold for around $60,000 to $65,000.

I found these prices far too expensive, especially when I knew that we already had the machinery, workers, and manufacturing experience needed to produce surgical instruments ourselves.

So I thought: Why don't we make the retractor ourselves and offer it at a much more affordable price?

That was the reason I started Retractor Maker.

We Started Making Them Ourselves

Instead of buying retractors from another company and reselling them, I decided to manufacture them in our own workshop.

We already had the machinery and manufacturing setup through our experience with surgical instruments. We used those resources to develop and manufacture our own retractor systems.

The idea was simple: if we could manufacture them ourselves, we could offer them at a price that more hospitals could afford.

Today, we are providing many of our retractor systems at prices up to 90% lower than comparable systems from major brands.

Our purpose is not simply to make retractors. It is to make them more affordable and accessible to hospitals, surgeons, and medical organizations around the world.

Still Part of Our Family's Manufacturing Business

Retractor Maker grew from the experience we already had in surgical instrument manufacturing.

I am still actively involved with Hospitech Traders, working alongside my father, while also running Retractor Maker as a dedicated business focused on surgical retractors.

The knowledge, machinery, and manufacturing experience we developed through Hospitech Traders gave us the foundation to start producing retractors ourselves.

Why We Do It

Retractor Maker was started because one customer asked us for a product we did not manufacture.

When I saw how expensive the available systems were, I believed there had to be a more practical way.

We already had the manufacturing capability. So we decided to build the products ourselves.

That decision eventually became Retractor Maker.

Today, our goal remains the same: manufacture retractors ourselves and provide them at prices that can be up to 90% lower than comparable systems from major brands, so more hospitals can afford the equipment they need.
